Are you an adult with sickle cell disease who’s recently had a vaso-occlusive episode? This study investigates better ways for emergency departments (EDs) to manage vaso-occlusive episodes, or pain crises, in people with sickle cell disease. This study is incorporating “Individualized Pain Plans” into patients’ electronic health records to allow for faster and more accurate treatment in the ED. To participate in this study, you must be between the ages of 18 and 45 and have sickle cell disease. You must also have had at least one visit to a participating ED in the past 90 days due to pain from a vaso-occlusive episode and at least one visit at the study site sickle cell disease clinic within the past 12 months. This study takes place in multiple locations in the United States.

Are you an adult who receives regular blood transfusions every 4 to 8 weeks for sickle cell disease? This study tests the effectiveness of blood from a donor with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme deficiency in a person with sickle cell disease. G6PD enzyme deficiency occurs when a person does not have enough of a protein called G6PD, which helps protect red blood cells from other substances in the blood. Results from this research will determine whether screening donors for G6PD is necessary. This will ensure that people with sickle cell disease receive blood transfusions that work best for them. To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 80 years old. This study takes place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Do you or your child have sickle cell disease? This study aims to develop a mathematical equation to estimate the functioning of the kidneys in children and adults with sickle cell disease. To participate in this study, you or your child must be between 5 and 50 years old. This study takes place in Birmingham, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; and Memphis, Tennessee.

Are you or your child between the ages of 3 and 21 and experiencing pain episodes? This study tests a treatment called arginine therapy for pain episodes in children with sickle cell disease. Researchers are investigating how safe and effective this treatment is, as well as how arginine is metabolized in the body and its effects on cells. To participate in this study, you or your child must have sickle cell disease and pain that requires medical attention. This study takes place in multiple locations in the United States.

Are you an adult with sickle cell disease who doesn't experience pain episodes? This study uses machine learning to identify sickle cell disease patients who may be at increased risk of chronic kidney disease. To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 65 years old with sickle cell disease and not experiencing any painful episodes. This study takes place in Chicago, Illinois, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Memphis, Tennessee.

The purpose of the research is to understand structural plaque abnormalities that make a carotid plaque unstable and brake off (embolize) which would help to predict and treat individuals who are likely to suffer not only classic episodic major strokes but also cognitive impairment.

The goal of this work is to develop and test a noninvasive ultrasound-based imaging technology to better identify patients at high risk of stroke so that appropriate and timely intervention may be administered to prevent it.

Are you an adult with carotid artery stenosis (CAS)? Researchers in this study want to learn more about the plaque that causes atherosclerosis in patients with carotid artery stenosis. To be in the study, you must be at least 18 years old and will undergo a carotid positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging exam so researchers can lean more on the new PET imaging approach for risk prediction in these patients. The study is taking place Saint Louis, Missouri, and in Los Angeles, California.

Adults with stroke-related disability spend more time sedentary than adults without stroke-related disability, which places them at risk for poor cardiovascular health outcomes. Few interventions are designed to reduce post-stroke sedentary time.

The purpose of this research is to test whether the teleABLE (Activating Behavior for Lasting Engagement) Intervention is feasible and acceptable to adults within the first 12 months post-stroke. The hypothesis is that teleABLE can be feasibly delivered using videoconferencing within the first 12 months post-stroke. 10 participants will complete assessments and activity monitoring (activPAL micro3) at 0 (baseline) and 8 (post-intervention)-weeks. Participants will complete 12 sessions of the teleABLE intervention.

Findings from this study will be used to guide the intervention protocol in the planned next phase of this research.

Are you an adult who has uncontrolled high blood pressure? This study will see whether an early notification system for health professionals can help manage patients’ high blood pressure, especially among those who have had a stroke or have an increased risk of stroke. To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 85 years old and have high blood pressure that is not controlled by medicine and lifestyle changes. This study is enrolling native English, Spanish, or Hmong speakers. The study is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
