Does your developing baby have a heart defect? Have you had a stillborn baby?
This study tests a new technology to measure fetal heart activity and find possible problems early. These problems include fetal arrhythmia and conduction disorders such as Brugada syndrome. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and pregnant, and have one of five high-risk complications of pregnancy: a fetus with a major congenital heart defect, hydrops, or gastroschisis; a previous unexplained stillbirth; or twins who share a placenta. This study is located in Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Have you been diagnosed with orthostatic intolerance?
This study aims to find out how the body’s regulation of basic functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure, is altered in people who have orthostatic intolerance. This condition, which has an unknown cause, is characterized by a racing heartbeat, dizziness, lightheadedness, and other symptoms that occur when a person stands up. To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 80 years old and have orthostatic intolerance. This study is located in Nashville, Tennessee.

Do you or your child have dyslipidemia? This study is exploring how different diagnostic tests can help us understand how lipid disorders, including high blood cholesterol and high blood triglycerides, affect the body. Information from this study may help improve the way lipid disorders are diagnosed or treated in the future. Participants in this study must be at least 2 years old. The study is being conducted in Bethesda, Maryland.

Are you an adult who is healthy or has problems with the level of cholesterol or other lipids in the blood? This study is gathering information on the risk factors for very high or very low levels of lipids, or fats, in the blood. Researchers will collect participants’ demographic information, medical history, and blood samples. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old. This study takes place in Dallas, Texas.

The goal of this project is to develop and pilot test a research protocol to assess the influence of a health information behavior enhanced intervention on self-management, blood pressure control, and brain activity in African American women with hypertension. This work will identify characteristics of African American women that are associated with improved self-management and decreased blood pressure, and subsequent reduction of risk of heart disease and premature death. The results of this project will have direct impact in informing interventions to improve blood pressure control, by advancing our knowledge of brain activity associated with behavior change in African American women with hypertension in the metro-Detroit area, and ultimately everywhere.

Recent evidence supports lymphatic regulation of tissue sodium handling, however fundamental gaps persist in knowledge regarding the role of lymphatics in human diseases of sodium dysregulation. The goal of this work is to apply novel, noninvasive imaging tools to measure relationships between lymphatic function and tissue sodium in patients with well-characterized lymphedema. Findings are intended to inform mechanisms of lymphatic clearance of tissue sodium, and provide novel imaging biomarkers of lymphedema progression and treatment response.

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the effects of abdominal compression and the medication midodrine, two interventions used for the treatment of orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure on standing), on hemodynamic markers of cardiovascular risk. The study will be conducted at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and consists of a screening and 2 testing days, one with abdominal compression and one with midodrine. The total length of the study will be about 5 days.
