Great Recession negatively affected the health of Americans, study found

The Great Recession of 2007-2009 not only had a markedly negative economic impact, but exacted a heavy toll on the health of Americans, with significant increases in blood pressure and glucose, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers analyzed longitudinal data from the NHLBI-funded Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, or MESA, and concluded that the recession was a “major shock: Its timing and depth were largely unanticipated, and resulted in levels of aggregate economic stress not experienced since the Great Depression.”
