Gene editing and nanotechnology could lower cholesterol

An NHLBI-funded team of researchers developed nanoparticles that can deliver the CRISPR genome-editing system and specifically modify genes in mice, as reported in Nature Biotechnology. This new technique eliminates the need to use viruses to carry the CRISPR components. It works by deleting and editing genes that cause disease, for instance, a gene that reduces cholesterol.
