Postoperative delirium can lead to prolonged impairment in cardiac surgery patients

NIH-supported investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Aging Brain Center at Hebrew SeniorLife, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that interventions to prevent delirium in advance of surgery may help cardiac patients more quickly recover cognitive abilities after surgery and avoid long-term cognitive consequences.
