Research Supplements to Promote Re-Entry into Biomedical and Behavioral Research Careers (Admin Supp) (Postdoctoral Individuals)
The Re-Entry Postdoctoral Level Research Supplement enables individuals with eligible NHLBI research grants/contracts to include individuals with high potential to re-enter an active research career after taking time off for family responsibilities or other qualifying circumstances. The aim of these supplements is to encourage such individuals to re-enter research careers within the NHLBI mission areas. This program will provide administrative supplements to existing NHLBI research grants/contracts for the purpose of supporting full-time or part-time research by these individuals to update their existing research skills and knowledge. It is anticipated, that at the completion of the supplement, the re-entry scientist would be encouraged to submit applications for fellowships, research grants, and other sources of independent support well before the supplement period ends. The duration of the career interruption should be for at least 1 year and no more than 8 years.
Generally, at the time of application, candidates should not be engaged in full-time paid research activities. Examples of qualifying interruptions would include a complete or partial hiatus from research activities for child rearing; an incapacitating illness or injury of the candidate, spouse, partner, or a member of the immediate family; relocation to accommodate a spouse, partner, or other close family member; pursuit of non-research endeavors that would permit earlier retirement of debt incurred in obtaining a doctoral degree; and military service.
The research proposed for the postdoctoral candidate is expected to have a defined research project which must be a logical extension of the parent grant/contract. The postdoctoral fellow must be given opportunities to interact with other individuals on the grant/contract, to contribute intellectually to the project, and to enhance his or her ability to compete for independent grant/contract support.

Who is eligible? All principal investigators at U.S. institutions with eligible NHLBI research grants/contracts. The parent grant/contract should have 1 year or more remaining at the time the supplement is awarded.
The opportunities? Re-enter an active research career after an interruption.
Duration of support? Requires a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 3 years of support.
Where? At the postdoctoral fellow?s institution or another institution.
Applications due? Applications should arrive at least three months before the requested start date, to allow time for review. Awards are made six times per year (December, February, April, June, August, and September). Postdoctoral fellows are strongly encouraged to synchronize the start date for the supplement award and the budget start date for the parent grant. The NHLBI may synchronize the requested start date if it is within three months of the budget start date of the parent grant to eliminate more than one award being made in a single fiscal year. Synchronization does not apply to contracts.

Salary: Salary plus fringe benefits and a maximum of $6,000 a year for supplies and travel. Up to $1,000 per year of this amount should be used for travel to scientific meetings. The requested salary and fringe benefits for a re-entry candidate must be in accordance with the salary structure of the grantee institution, consistent with the level of effort. Equipment may not be purchased except in unusual circumstances and not without prior approval of the NHLBI.
Reasonable Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities: As a part of this award, funds may be requested to make changes or adjustments in the research setting that will make it possible for an otherwise qualified employee with a disability to perform the essential functions associated with his/her role on the project. The accommodations requested under this program must be DIRECTLY related to the performance of the proposed role on the research project and must be appropriate to the disabilities of the individual.
