Intro: Welcome to another episode of Ask A Scientist. I’m Taneisha Nicole with Dr. Sean Agbor-Enoh from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at NIH. TN: We’re discussing why it’s so important that scientific research include a variety of people with different lived experiences and backgrounds. What are your thoughts? SAE: We all need to somehow benefit from that research. I think by including a diverse population, you’re going to get a product that works for everybody. TN: How can we make that happen? SAE: I think we need to recognize that maybe not us directly, but our history in research, has not really given us reasons to trust us. We need to build that trust. TN: How can we build trust? SAE: It’s that idea of talking to patients to try to understand them as people first. And seeing and making sure they understand how important their contribution could be to your research.
