Intro: I’m Tanesha Nicole and this is another edition of Ask A Scientist. Today, I’m talking with Dr. Makeda Williams from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at NIH about how global health benefits us in the United States. HOST: Dr. Williams, what can we learn from other countries’ healthcare tactics? MW: They may be doing things different and things that we have never done before. HOST: Can you give an example? MW: In Malaysia there are challenges with getting critical medical supplies, especially for blood donations to hospitals. Thinking how to utilize technology such as drones to deliver supplies provides an innovative and creative way to address the blood shortage in that country. HOST: How would that benefit people here in the U.S.? MW: What we can learn here is how to come up with low cost innovative and creative solutions to addressing big health care problems.
