Intro: I'm Tanisha Nicole here with doctor Mariska Brown from the National Heart, lung and Blood Institute at NIH to ask the scientist what shift workers should know about sleep and their health. TN: Getting enough sleep can be hard for people in certain jobs. How does that affect their health? MB: Shift workers are a special case because they are working typically during the biological diet. For people working these nonstandard shifts, the research tells us that they are at increased risk again of disease. TN: What else does the science say? MB: Recent research is revealing new opportunities by investigating sleep in real world settings to potentially develop interventions that are protecting the health of shift workers for example, avoiding eating or reducing food intake between midnight and 6 a.m. may be a strategy to help control disease. TN: So sleep and eating are connected? MB: Sleep and eating are very much connected. Outro: For more about sleep health, visit NHL by nih.gov.
