Introduction
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) convened several scientific experts from a broad range of biomedical, behavioral, environmental, and social science backgrounds to explore community-engaged implementation research strategies for reducing cardiovascular disparities. Discussions during this workshop will help inform NHLBI Strategic Vision Implementation Plan for health disparities implementation research which can have significant impact when scaled up across high burden communities.
Background
NHBLI has supported several long-standing cohort studies, representing diverse populations, that have added vast new knowledge to our understanding of the onset and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors. These observational research studies have tracked national CVD trends over the decades and have helped guide efforts for CVD prevention and control. These legacy cohorts have also provided documentation of the substantial and pervasive CVD disparities in specific populations. High burden CVD health disparities are not limited to these cohorts and are also found within U.S. population groups defined by socioeconomic status, educational attainment, sex, race, ethnicity, and geography. While proven-effective interventions capable of addressing CVD in these communities, few implementation research studies have been designed specifically to explore their use in reducing and eliminating CVD disparities.
Presentations
During the workshop there were several presentations and follow-up discussions focusing on several areas including: high burden populations, evidence-based interventions, strategies to engage communities, engaging health care networks interfacing with high burden populations, optimal methods for implementation research studies, and finally, training needs to adequately address each of these areas. The workshop discussions highlighted the opportunities, challenges, strategies, partnerships, and useful resources for tackling CVD disparities amongst population groups with the highest burden. Several key research concepts and approaches emerged from which NHLBI will develop recommendations.
Publication Plans
The organizers for the workshop plan to publish a report from the meeting with a summary of the main findings and recommendations in a peer reviewed journal.
