Do you have chronic bronchitis and COPD and want to improve treatment? This study will be testing how well a medicine called ivacaftor that is used to treat cystic fibrosis works also to treat symptoms of chronic bronchitis. New research suggests chronic bronchitis may be due to a problem similar to cystic fibrosis. To participate in this study, you must be 40 to 80 years old, have a history of smoking, and have not been diagnosed with asthma or cystic fibrosis. This study will be conducted in Birmingham, Alabama.

Do you have COPD? This study will be looking for genes that may play a role in the development of COPD by looking at the blood from patients who have COPD, as well as the blood from those patients’ family members. To participate in this study, you must be 52 years old or younger and must not be pregnant or have other serious lung diseases such as lung cancer. Do you have coronary heart disease or are you healthy and would like to participate in research? This study is comparing how well two types of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners can detect different types of heart diseases, such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, congenital heart disease, and heart valve disease. The new type of MRI scanner in this study uses less energy than a traditional scanner and may be suitable for people who have metal devices in their bodies. This study is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

Do you want to help improve heart imaging techniques? This study aims to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods to detect coronary heart disease. Healthy people and people who have coronary heart disease will have MRI scans while resting and after taking a medicine that temporarily makes your heart work harder. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and either healthy or diagnosed with coronary heart disease. The study is taking place in Los Angeles, California.

Do you have cystic fibrosis and are you eligible for a lung transplant? This study is interested in learning more about the presence and location of certain bacteria in the lungs of people who have cystic fibrosis by examining lungs that have been removed from patients who have cystic fibrosis who are undergoing a lung transplant. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old, have been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, be eligible for a lung transplant, and have tried all other available treatments without success. This study is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Do you want to participate in a study with your child who has cystic fibrosis? This study is exploring computer models to compare cell samples from the noses of people who have cystic fibrosis, their parents, and other healthy individuals in hopes of better predicting how patients will respond to medicine. These computer models may allow medicines to be developed more rapidly and better predict who will respond to a certain cystic fibrosis treatment. To participate in this study, you must fall into one of the following groups: (1) have cystic fibrosis and be at least 12 years old, (2) be the biological parent of a cystic fibrosis patient enrolled in the study and be at least 18 years old, or (3) have no history of lung disease and be at least 18 years old. This study is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
