Have you had a heart attack, and do you want to help improve strategies for blood transfusion?
The study is comparing two strategies for blood transfusions in heart attack patients who have anemia—whether to give a blood transfusion when the hemoglobin level is less than 10 g/dL, or to give blood only when the blood count is below 8 g/dL. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old, have anemia, and be hospitalized for a heart attack. The study is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Were you or your child recently diagnosed with VTE?
This study is testing a six-week course of blood-thinning medicines for the treatment of venous thromboembolisms (VTE) to see if they are as effective as the standard treatment course of three months. To participate in this study, you or your child must be younger than 21 years old. Do you have a ventricular arrhythmia?
This study aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of low-energy shocks for the treatment of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. This approach will be tested during a catheter ablation or placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 75 years old. This study is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Austin, Texas.
Do you or your child have severe sickle cell disease and also know a half-matched bone marrow donor?
This study is seeking to improve bone marrow transplantation success from half-matched donors by testing a different conditioning procedure that uses a variety of medicines to prepare for the transplant. To participate in this study, you must be 15 to 45 years old and have severe sickle cell disease or have a child 5 to 14 years old who has had a stroke. This study is located in many sites across the United States, including Miami, Florida, and St. Louis, Missouri.
Are you scheduled for a stem cell transplant with cord blood?
This study will assess the safety and effectiveness of certain cord blood transplants. The study will help researchers learn the best methods for collecting, storing, and using cord blood in transplants. To participate in this study, you must have a disorder that compromises your body’s ability to make blood cells. This study is located in Bethesda, Maryland.
Did you develop atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery?
Did you develop atrial fibrillation after a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery? This study is looking at how well oral anticoagulation medicines work to prevent complications, such as blood clots and heart attack, for patients who experience post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). This study is in multiple locations around the country.
Are you an adult with sickle cell disease? This study aims to determine whether monthly exchange blood transfusions (removing blood and replacing it with transfused red blood cells) can improve health and prevent or reduce the number of pain crises. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old, have sickle cell disease, and have not been on a chronic exchange transfusion program for at least 2 months. This study is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Do you have heart failure and depression?
This study aims to see whether stepped care for depression helps people who have heart failure manage their care (follow heart-healthy lifestyle recommendations and take their prescribed medicines). Participants will either receive usual care for depression or take part in cognitive behavioral therapy, where they work with a mental health counselor to learn ways to manage symptoms and cope with challenging situations. Certain participants may then be referred for antidepressant medicines. All participants will then receive heart failure education. To participate in this study, you must be at least 25 years old and diagnosed with heart failure and major depressive disorder. This study is located in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Do you have symptoms of a lung disease (such as long-term wet cough, bronchiectasis, or recurrent pneumonia) with no genetic diagnosis? This study aims to develop new ways to diagnose primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) or primary immune deficiency (PID), two conditions that can have similar symptoms. Researchers will combine information from genetic testing, lung imaging, and lung function tests to diagnose and tell the difference between these two conditions. Participants in this study must be 5 to 45 years old and must have symptoms of a serious lung disease but no diagnosis. This study is taking place at multiple locations in the United States and in Canada, including the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Are you 65 years old or older, and do you have severe primary mitral regurgitation? This condition — also called degenerative mitral regurgitation — happens when there is a problem with the mitral valve itself or its supporting tissue, leading to a leaky valve. This study is comparing the safety and effectiveness of two different ways of repairing the mitral valve: transcatheter edge-to-edge repair and surgical repair. To participate in this study, your healthcare provider must determine that you are a candidate for both mitral valve transcatheter edge-to-edge repair and surgical repair. This study takes place in multiple locations across the United States and Canada.
