Are you 15 to 40 years old and have severe sickle cell disease?
This study is comparing long-term outcomes for patients who receive blood and bone marrow transplants and those who receive standard treatment with medicines. Participants also have an option of contributing blood samples to be stored for future research. Participants must be 15 to 40 years old and have severe sickle cell disease. Are you scheduled for a stem cell transplant with cord blood?
This study will assess the safety and effectiveness of certain cord blood transplants. The study will help researchers learn the best methods for collecting, storing, and using cord blood in transplants. To participate in this study, you must have a disorder that compromises your body’s ability to make blood cells. This study is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

Do you live in Iowa and want to work with a pharmacist to manage your high blood pressure?
This study will test a program that uses pharmacists to help people manage high blood pressure. You will be given a blood pressure monitor to take readings at home and text them to a pharmacist. You will then either talk to the pharmacist once or be part of the more intensive program where the pharmacist develops a care plan and monitors you for a year. To participate in this study, you must be older than 21, have had a systolic pressure greater than 145 mm Hg or diastolic pressure greater than 95 mm Hg at your previous clinic visit, and be a patient at the Family Medicine, River Crossings, Scott Blvd, or Muscatine University of Iowa Clinics. This study is located in Iowa.

Are you an adult with high blood pressure and currently a patient at the University of Iowa River Crossing, Family Medicine, or Scott Boulevard clinic? This study is exploring whether working closely with a pharmacist to monitor blood pressure can help improve symptoms of high blood pressure compared with infrequent discussions with a pharmacist via text and phone calls. To participate in this study, you must be between 21 and 100 years old. This study takes place in Iowa City, Iowa.

Are you a 30- to 55-year-old smoker or non-smoker who would like to support better understanding of COPD risk factors? This study aims to find early signs of COPD in adults who have a high risk of this condition. Researchers will compare results from questionnaires, lung tests, and other tests in people who smoke and in people who do not smoke to look for factors that predict which people will develop COPD. To participate in this study, you must either currently smoke or have no history of smoking. This study takes place in multiple locations in the United States.

Are you a healthy adult or an adult who has been diagnosed with an interstitial lung disease (ILD)? This study will test whether administering an inhaled gas called hyperpolarized 129Xe before magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) better detects changing disease activity. To participate in the study, you must be age 18 or older and have no history of smoking for the past 5 years. This study will take place in Iowa City, Iowa; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Durham, North Carolina.

Is your newborn in the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital?
This study aims to better understand breathing problems and blood flow through the heart in premature newborns to better detect conditions such as pulmonary hypertension. To participate in this study, your newborn must have been born prematurely between 24 and 29 weeks’ gestation and be a patient in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. This study is located in St. Louis, Missouri.

Did you develop atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery?
Did you develop atrial fibrillation after a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery? This study is looking at how well oral anticoagulation medicines work to prevent complications, such as blood clots and heart attack, for patients who experience post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). This study is in multiple locations around the country.

Do you or your child have obesity and high blood cholesterol or triglycerides?
This study is testing the use of a statin in young people to see whether early treatment of high blood cholesterol can affect the risk of developing plaque in blood vessels. Participants in this study must be age 10-17, have a body mass index (BMI) in the obese range, be fluent in English, and not be pregnant.
