Do you have chronic bronchitis and COPD and want to improve treatment? This study will be testing how well a medicine called ivacaftor that is used to treat cystic fibrosis works also to treat symptoms of chronic bronchitis. New research suggests chronic bronchitis may be due to a problem similar to cystic fibrosis. To participate in this study, you must be 40 to 80 years old, have a history of smoking, and have not been diagnosed with asthma or cystic fibrosis. This study will be conducted in Birmingham, Alabama.

Are you an adult with a lung disease such as COPD, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, or emphysema? This study aims to discover if low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans are as effective as regular CT scans in monitoring your COPD. This study is located in Bethesda, Maryland, at the NIH Clinical Center.

Do you have COPD, or are you a healthy volunteer who is willing to do an imaging test? This study will use an imaging test called single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to compare the lung function of patients who have COPD with healthy volunteers who smoke and who do not smoke. The CT scan can detect death of cells in a process called apoptosis, which is linked to severe COPD and cannot be seen in the normal adult lung. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and either have moderate to severe COPD, not have COPD and be a smoker for longer than 10 years, or not have COPD and never smoked. This study is located in New York, New York.

To participate in this study, you must be age 18 or older, have asthma or COPD, and not already be seeing a lung specialist. Do you know a newborn or toddler who has severe combined immunodeficiency? This study will test the safety and effectiveness of genetic therapies to treat X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID-X1), a rare genetic immune disorder. The therapies could be a new approach to treat SCID-X1 in people who do not have a brother or sister to be a donor for stem cell transplant. To participate in this study, the child must be 2 years old or younger. This study is located in Memphis, Tennessee; San Francisco, California; and Seattle, Washington.

Are you an adult who does not have high blood pressure and is interested in research? This study will investigate how the brain regulates the body’s response to stress and how infection with HIV or pre-hypertension affects regulation. Your heart and brain activity will be measured while you are at rest, during a mentally stressful task, and while you feel angry. The study will also test whether a breathing exercise improves regulation. People with and without HIV and pre-hypertension will be included. To participate in this study, you must be between 21 and 65 years old and not have high blood pressure. This study is located in Miami, Florida.
