Do you have COPD, or are you a healthy volunteer who is willing to do an imaging test? This study will use an imaging test called single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to compare the lung function of patients who have COPD with healthy volunteers who smoke and who do not smoke. The CT scan can detect death of cells in a process called apoptosis, which is linked to severe COPD and cannot be seen in the normal adult lung. To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and either have moderate to severe COPD, not have COPD and be a smoker for longer than 10 years, or not have COPD and never smoked.
