The goal of this clinical trial is to compare different types of blood transfusions for critically injured patients who require large-volume blood transfusions. Participants must be at least 15 years old and need a massive blood transfusion. The study is taking place in locations in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Do you or your child have a platelet, bleeding, or white blood cell disorder? This study is looking at people who have platelet or other blood disorders. The researchers will use a blood sample to look for problems with platelets and a possible genetic cause in the participant’s DNA or RNA. To participate in this study, you must be a child or adult who either is healthy or has a platelet disorder, coagulation disorder, or white blood cell disorder. Do you or your child have dyslipidemia? This study is exploring how different diagnostic tests can help us understand how lipid disorders, including high blood cholesterol and high blood triglycerides, affect the body. Are you an adult who is healthy or has problems with the level of cholesterol or other lipids in the blood? This study is gathering information on the risk factors for very high or very low levels of lipids, or fats, in the blood. Do you have HIV and insomnia? This study is looking at whether insomnia increases pain and inflammation in people who have HIV. Have you previously been prescribed opioid medicines? This study will find out whether waking up frequently during the night can affect the way your brain processes certain medicines. To participate in this study, you must be 18 to 48 years old, have a normal sleep cycle, and have previously taken opioid medicines to treat pain. This study is located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Are you an adult with mild heart failure and a left bundle branch block? This study will test whether a type of pacemaker called a cardiac resynchronization device can help the heart pump more blood in people who have mild heart failure (HF) and left bundle branch block. In the study, participants will have a cardiac resynchronization device implanted. This study is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

Pneumonia is a major public health problem for the elderly and is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death for this population, particularly for elderly nursing home residents. This planning grants seeks to establish a safe and effective dose of zinc supplementation with the goal to conduct a larger randomized clinical trial to study the effect of zinc supplementation in nursing home elderly with low serum zinc levels on the risk, antibiotic use, and duration of sick days with pneumonia. This project has significant potential to positively impact the health and quality of life in the elderly and to reduce the economic costs associated with their care.
