Are you an adult who has asthma, or are you willing to be a healthy volunteer? This study is looking at the DNA in airway cells to see how they differ between people who have asthma and people who do not. To get a sample of cells from your airways, you may have a bronchoscopy (a tube inserted through your mouth into your airways). To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 70 years old, either with asthma or with no history of asthma. This study is located in San Francisco, California.

Do you have asthma and obesity and live near Aurora, Colorado? Obesity can lead to widespread inflammation that may make asthma worse. This study will test whether a medicine called CXA-10 reduces inflammation in the airways and body and improves asthma symptoms in people who have obesity. To participate in this study, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, have a BMI of 30 or greater, and have been on long-acting controller medicine—such as inhaled corticosteroids or long-acting beta2-agonists—for at least three months. This study is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Are you an adult with both asthma and obesity? This study is testing whether a medicine called L-citrulline can help treat asthma and improve lung function in people who have obesity. Has your child been treated for an asthma attack with an oral corticosteroid medicine in the last 12 months? A study team will recruit 60 teens and young adults (between 12 and 21 years old) with persistent asthma who are at high risk for future exacerbation. This study examines the contribution of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), a protein that is involved in the inflammatory response, in asthma flare-ups. This study takes place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Are you considering a blood stem cell transplant? This study is investigating a new method for collecting blood stem cells from donors to see if it reduces transplant complications, such as rejection, in patients who have blood diseases. To participate in this study, you must have a well-matched donor; you and your donor must be between 4 and 80 years old; and you must not be a candidate for immunosuppressive therapy. The study will help researchers learn the best methods for collecting, storing, and using cord blood in transplants. This study is exploring how different diagnostic tests can help us understand how lipid disorders, including high blood cholesterol and high blood triglycerides, affect the body. This study is gathering information on the risk factors for very high or very low levels of lipids, or fats, in the blood. Pneumonia is a major public health problem for the elderly and is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death for this population, particularly for elderly nursing home residents. This planning grants seeks to establish a safe and effective dose of zinc supplementation with the goal to conduct a larger randomized clinical trial to study the effect of zinc supplementation in nursing home elderly with low serum zinc levels on the risk, antibiotic use, and duration of sick days with pneumonia. This project has significant potential to positively impact the health and quality of life in the elderly and to reduce the economic costs associated with their care.
