INTRODUCTION, Dr. Michael Twery

  • The meeting was called into session at 2:00 pm, [FR Doc. 2018-07820].
  • The Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board (SDRAB) is a Federal Advisory Committee established by the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993 (42 USC Sec. 285b-7).
  • The Board was informed of their status as special government employees and that conflict of interest guidelines require that members l recuse themselves from any discussions presenting the potential appearance of a covered conflict.

SLEEP RESEARCH PLAN IDEAS AND DISCUSSION

Goal and framework of developing the research plan was summarized.

The next step is to begin refining and drafting plan content in preparation for the next in-person meeting. The draft content and recommendations of the Board will then be considered by the trans-NIH Sleep research coordinating committee in the context of the mission priorities of NIH components.

  • The Board discussion of scientific directions included:
    • The overarching framework of HHS goals and priorities.
    • Development of sleep and circadian biomarkers for risk stratification, diagnosis, prognosis, and response to treatment.
    • Understanding the role of sleep in child development.
    • The development of patient-centered strategies.
    • Utilizing “omics” to for precision medicine in the sleep and circadian fields.
    • Translational and dissemination research.
    • Translation of basic circadian knowledge into effective treatment strategies for circadian sleep and wake disorders.

Board members were encouraged to discuss needs and opportunities with the communities that they represent and forward feedback to the SDRAB Chair and NCSDR staff

PUBLIC AND STAKEHOLDER COMMENTS AND DISCUSSION

  • Public comments highlighted the importance of communication with patient communities.
  • The Sleep Research Society highlighted the need for research connecting sleep with function as an important scientific direction.

FUTURE PUBLIC CONFERENCES

  • Sleep and Women’s Health open public conference (Oct 17-18, 2018) at NIH Natcher Conference Center; researchers, patients, and stakeholders in women’s family and children’s health.
  • The NHLBI will sponsor a booth at the APSS 2018 meeting in Baltimore, MD. NCSDR and NIH staff will be in attendance.

FUTURE MEETINGS

  • The next in-person SDRAB meeting was announced for June 21 and 22, 2018.
