NHLBI, ACC, AHA Announce Next Steps in Developing Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prevention

Description

NHLBI LogoOn June 19, 2013, we announced a change in approach to the development of clinical practice guidelines on the Director’s Corner page. Over the intervening weeks, we moved forward according to the principles outlined in our statement.

Today, we are pleased to announce that the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) have agreed to spearhead the collaborative development of the cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention guidelines on high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and overweight/obesity.  The AHA and ACC have a history of working collaboratively with partners to produce clinical guidelines, some of which are endorsed or jointly published with leading professional societies. Therefore, we are confident that the outcome will result in high-quality, credible guidelines for use by the clinical community at large.

This new collaborative partnership model of guideline development will enable the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to continue to serve its unique role of supporting essential research and serving as a trusted source of health information that educates patients and informs clinical practice.

The ACC, AHA, and NHLBI believe this decision best serves patients, clinicians, and the scientific process.
