Hypertension Therapy Prevents Heart Failure Among Elderly

Treatment with a low-dose diuretic cuts by half the chance that an older person with high systolic blood pressure will develop heart failure, according to results from a National Institutes of Health (NIH) trial. Those who had already had a heart attack experienced an even greater benefit--their chance of developing heart failure dropped by 80 percent.

NHLBI Stops Arrhythmia Study -- Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators Reduce Deaths

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health has stopped a clinical trial comparing two treatment strategies for patients with life-threatening heart arrhythmias: an implantable cardiac defibrillator versus antiarrhythmic drug treatment. The Institute's action was prompted by a significant reduction in deaths in the group of patients whose arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) was treated with a defibrillator.

High Bone Mass Associated with Breast Cancer Risk

Women with the highest bone mass are at a much greater risk of postmenopausal breast cancer than those with lower bone mass, according to the results of a long-term epidemiological study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study's results are published in the February 27, 1997, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Updated Asthma Guidelines Released

The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) today released the Report of the Second Expert Panel on the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. The report, based on a comprehensive review of the scientific evidence accumulated during the past 6 years, updates the first asthma clinical practice guidelines released in 1991.
