COPD National Action Plan aims to reduce the burden of the third leading cause of death

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), along with federal and non-federal partners, today released the first-ever COPD National Action Plan, a detailed, patient-centered roadmap for addressing one of the most urgent health concerns facing Americans. The plan was released at the American Thoracic Society International Conference meeting this week in Washington, D.C. NHLBI is part of the National Institutes of Health.

Media Availability: Scientists Show Link Between Persistent Childhood Asthma and COPD

WHAT: Scientists funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute have shown a link between persistent childhood asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Persistent asthma is characterized by recurrent breathing difficulties irrespective of medication use. COPD is a debilitating lung disease that typically affects current or former smokers in their 40s or older.

Media Availability: Study finds COPD-like respiratory symptoms common among smokers despite lack of COPD diagnosis

WHAT:  In a finding that could lead to better treatment of smoking-related lung diseases, scientists are reporting that about half of current or former smokers have respiratory symptoms similar to COPD and an increased risk for exacerbations or “flare ups” of their symptoms despite normal lung function and a lack of COPD diagnosis.  Many of these individuals show COPD-like symptoms, such as shortness of breath and difficulty exercising.

NIH, NHLBI to host COPD Town Hall Meeting to develop National Action Plan

The National Institutes of Health is partnering with other Federal agencies to host a national meeting to develop a National Action Plan for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. The COPD Town Hall Meeting will take place February 29 and March 1 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md.

CDC and NIH survey provides first report of state-level COPD prevalence

The age-adjusted prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) varies considerably within the United States, from less than 4 percent of the population in Washington and Minnesota to more than 9 percent in Alabama and Kentucky. These state-level rates are among the COPD data available for the first time as part of the newly released 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey.
