Worldwide study identifies 22 new genetic risk factors for stroke

An international research consortium partly funded by NHLBI, conducted a study of DNA samples from 520,000 persons worldwide identified 22 new genetic risk factors for stroke. Published in Nature Genetics, the researchers said the findings of genetic regions that are strongly correlated to stroke will increase potential targets for stroke drug development. Previously, only 10 genetic risk factors had been identified for stroke.
