A protein called sarcolipin protects mice against obesity, according to a recent study. Additional experiments showed that this protein regulates energy metabolism in muscle. According to the authors, drugs that target sarcolipin could enhance energy expenditure in muscle and prevent metabolic disease. The study, which was partly funded by NHLBI, was published in the journal Cell Reports.
