Artificial-version of lung protein shows promise for healing injured lungs

Researchers say they have developed a synthetic version of a natural protein called lung surfactant that restored breathing capacity to the injured lungs of rats. The artificial substance could lead to better, cheaper treatments for lung injury in humans, they say. Their study, partly funded by NHLBI, appeared in Scientific Reports, a research journal of Nature.
