Boston Trainers Help Spread the Word

With four new We Can!® parent classes on the verge of kicking off in Boston, and three more in the pipeline, ensuring that the people leading those classes are up to speed on program offerings is critical.

That's why on September 15, the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC)—a We Can! Founding Intensive Site since 2005—hosted a free "Train the Trainer" session on the We Can! Parent Program. They used downloadable materials from the We Can! Energize Our Families: Parent Program Leader's Guide together with the Parent Handbook.

Twenty-eight participants from Boston and surrounding areas turned out for the half-day training session. They included doctors, registered dietitians, health coordinators, Head Start program representatives and others.

The BPHC workshop not only guided them through the ins and outs of the Parent Program and its supporting materials, it provided them with strategies to make culturally relevant changes that meet the needs of a diverse audience.

Would-be trainers can also earn American Dietetic Association-approved credits. Those who complete the training and decide to teach classes will be paid $200 per four-session class that they teach by the Boston Public Health Commission. The Commission has a series of consultants on hand and ready to teach the program. The Commission will also be providing We Can! teaching materials for free to trainers.
