Venous Thromboembolism Symptoms

Call your healthcare provider right away if you think you may have symptoms of VTE. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) should be taken seriously, as it may lead to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE).

Symptoms of VTE can include:

  • Swollen and tender legs that are painful to the touch, if you have blood clots that block blood flow to your leg veins (deep vein thrombosis or DVT)
  • Shortness of breath and pain when breathing, if you have a blood clot that travels to the lungs (pulmonary embolism)

The symptoms of VTE are not the same for everyone. Sometimes VTE does not cause symptoms until serious complications develop. Because the symptoms of DVT and pulmonary embolism are different, it’s important to know the warning signs if you are at risk of VTE.
