National Wear Red Day Toolkit
To help women learn how to manage their risk for heart disease, The Heart Truth® encourages women to invite loved ones to do something heart healthy. Want to plan a heart healthy event in your community but not sure how to get started? Here are some tips for planning and conducting events to raise awareness about heart health in your community and/or office.
Share advice and heart health information with those you love through social media and by hosting your own community event utilizing ideas From the Heart, posting state info cards on the prevalence of coronary heart disease in your state and sharing Your Heart First videos for inspiration.
Wear red and encourage your friends, family or coworkers to do the same. Organize a group photo and share on social media.
Organize a "Wear Jeans if You Wear Red" promotion on National Wear Red Day® (which takes place in February of every year) or hold a contest for the "Best Red Outfit" at your workplace.
Organize a "heart healthy lunch day" with your friends, family or work colleagues. Arrange for catering or coordinate a potluck luncheon. Direct your caterer or potluck guests to select recipes from Keep the Beat™ Recipes: Deliciously Healthy Dinners.
Organize walking groups before or after work or during your lunch break, in the spirit of women's heart health.
Host a "brown-bag" or "red bag" lunch at your workplace or community event, utilizing The Heart Truth Speaker's Kit (PDF 3.46MB) and The Heart Truth community video featuring real women affected by heart disease.
Organize a "Red Attire Evening" or "Red Dress Luncheon" and serve a creative menu of heart healthy foods.
Organize free heart health screenings at a community venue.
Ask local stores and restaurants to display National Wear Red Day posters(312KB), and/or offer discounts to customers wearing red on National Wear Red Day.
Ask your local library to set up a special exhibit featuring heart health materials about women and heart disease.
Organize a Red Dress Seminar/Health Fair.
Ask local gyms or sports clubs to distribute heart healthy materials and information.
Organize a local Red Dress® fashion show.
Organize a Red Dress Sunday celebration or other faith-based activity at your place of worship.
Partner with local beauty salons and spas to exhibit and reinforce the message that women need to take care of themselves both inside and out.
