Celebrating 10 Years

For a decade, the Red Dress has inspired women to protect their heart health. The good news is that women are now living longer and healthier lives. Heart disease deaths continue to decline in American women.

But many women still don't take their risk for heart disease seriously or personally. We need your help to increase awareness about heart disease and inspire women to take action to protect their heart health.

Spotlight on Cholesterol

September is National Cholesterol Education Month.

Too much cholesterol in your blood increases your risk of developing heart disease. Nearly 1 in every 2 American women has high or borderline high cholesterol. The condition usually has no signs or symptoms, so many people don't know that their cholesterol levels are too high.

Knowing your cholesterol numbers is important, even when you're feeling fine. If your cholesterol levels are normal, you can work with your doctor to keep them that way. If your levels are too high, your doctor will advise you about treatment with lifestyle changes and medicines. Check out these resources for more information.

The Heart Truth® is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease and is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Designed to warn women of their #1 health threat, The Heart Truth® created and introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women.
