About 50 to 70 million Americans have sleep disorders , and 1 in 3 adults do not regularly get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep they need to protect their health.

The NHLBI offers many resources on sleep, including publications and videos, to help patients, their families, and health professionals. Some publications are also available in Spanish.

Women and Sleep

The NHLBI supports studies on sleep and sleep disorders and how they affect women’s health. In 2018, the NHLBI collaborated with other Federal agencies on a research conference on sleep and women’s health. The conference highlighted research advances and opportunities related to sleep deficiencies and sleep disorders in women, such as how sleep disorders can increase the risk for problems during pregnancy.
