Acting Executive Officer
Biography
Ariel Herman is the Acting Executive Officer (EO) for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health. In this role, he serves as principal advisor to the Institute Director on all management, personnel and workforce planning issues affecting the NHLBI. Ariel also oversees the Institute’s Office of Management, including human resource and personnel management (ER, EEO, CIVIL), administrative services, ethics, contracting, freedom of information, other transactions, planning, analytics and evaluation, information technology, and workforce development branches. In that capacity he directs the business operations and analytics in alignment with the Strategic Vision and oversees the development and administration of Institute policies and procedures for administrative and program management activities. Ariel also provides leadership to the Institute on its continuity of operations program.
Ariel joined the federal service in 2005, and has served in many roles across NHLBI including Administrative Officer and Supervisory Section Chief within the Division of Intramural Management, Director of Ethics, Director of Executive Services, and the NHLBI Deputy Executive Officer. Prior to his arrival at NIH, Ariel served as a Program Advisor within the Grants Resource Center at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Ariel received a B.A in American Studies and a M.S. in Electronic Commerce from the University of Maryland. Ariel has an appreciation for the benefits technology, when implemented appropriately, can contribute to the improvement of business operations of an organization and has been involved with major implementation efforts including POTS, TRAC, and the Intranet.
