Behavioral Medicine Research in Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

Program Summary:

This T32 research training program has operated continuously since 1979. The framework for this research training is cardiovascular behavioral medicine, which involves the integration of population-based epidemiological studies, clinical investigation and basic science. Present research includes: (a) population-based studies such as the NHLBI multi-center Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos; (b) clinical investigation in NIH funded intervention studies to prevent cardiovascular risk, CVD and adverse coronary events (e.g., smoking cessation; management of risk factors in high risk patients); and (c) basic research as in our NIH funded projects studying social environment, hyperlipidemia, inflammation, oxidative stress and atherosclerosis in rabbit and mouse models of CVD. Most training grant activities are coordinated within the University of Miami Behavioral Medicine Research Center (BMRC), which is a multi-disciplinary unit involving faculty from the departments of Medicine, Neurology, Pathology, Psychology, and Public Health Sciences. Because Miami is a multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-ethnic community, much of the research associated with the training program takes place within this context. Trainees are typically involved in the design, conduct and publications involved in ongoing research as well as in the design and carrying out of separate studies derived from the parent projects. Although our training emphasis is on engagement in research, available didactic training includes coursework in statistics, epidemiology, behavioral medicine, mechanisms of disease, neuroscience and molecular biology. Rotations core laboratories for in Biochemistry and Metabolism, Cardiovascular Measurement, Data Management and Statistics, and Pathology are available through BMRC.
