NHLBI Topics of Special Interest (TOSI)

The topics listed below are of high programmatic interest to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). TOSI will change periodically as Institute programmatic interests dictate. These topics are not formal solicitations for applications (Funding Opportunity Announcements). Although funds are not set aside for awards on these topics, applications submitted in response to TOSI are eligible for special funding consideration. TOSI applications will be peer-reviewed by standing study sections at the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR).

Investigators interested in developing applications for these topics are encouraged to discuss their ideas with NHLBI contacts who are indicated in the table below. Researchers should submit investigator-initiated R01 applications through PA-13-302.

Special instructions for submitting TOSI applications:

  • At the beginning of the title, please include the following three characters: HL-. (Important: according to the NIH's SF424 (R&R) Application Guide, NIH limits title character length to 81 characters including the spaces between words and punctuation. Titles in excess of 81 characters will be truncated).
  • In the first sentence of the abstract, please include the specialized code as shown in the last column of the table below.
