Biography

Kathryn McMurry, M.S., is the Nutrition Coordinator at the National, Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, Ms. McMurry coordinates NHLBI involvement in government policy and communications efforts that relate to nutrition; provides expert input into nutrition science and policy activities; and leads research translation and communication activities that relate to nutrition, obesity, and physical activity.

Ms. McMurry leads efforts to promote greater communication across the Institute regarding all nutrition-related activities and represents the NHLBI on internal and external nutrition committees such as the NIH Nutrition Coordinating Committee and the Dietary Guidelines Alliance. She also was involved in the research reviews that underpinned the 2013 updates to clinical guidelines for obesity and lifestyle management of cardiovascular risk.

Ms. McMurry joined the NHLBI in 2011. Previously, Ms. McMurry was a Senior Nutrition Advisor at the HHS Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP).  At ODPHP, she played a lead role in developing the 2000, 2005, and 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans; chaired the Federal steering committee for the evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs);  served as liaison to the Healthy People 2020 Work Group on Nutrition and Weight Status; and led the development of the 2001 Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity. 

Before joining the Federal government, Ms. McMurry worked in product development and nutrition labeling in the food industry. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science from the University of Delaware and a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from the University of New Haven (Connecticut).
