Animal Bedrooms

Animals need sleep. Giraffes sleep less than 2 hours a day. Bats need to sleep 20 hours a day. Human children need to sleep at least 9 hours each night.

Some animals sleep by themselves. Some like to have company! Koala bears always sleep alone. Penguins sleep in groups to stay warm.

Different animals sleep in different places. Some sleep in caves. Some sleep in trees. Some sleep under water.

Birds sleep in many different places. The Baltimore oriole sleeps in a nest that hangs from the end of a branch. The Elf owl sleeps inside a cactus plant!

Dogs will sleep anywhere. Sometimes dogs will circle around and around before they fall down and go to sleep. Sometimes they paw at the ground, too.

Polar bears have to stay warm when they sleep. Some build their sleeping dens inside snowdrifts to keep the wind away. Some build tunnels inside of great heaps of snow on top of the frozen sea.

Squirrels have different sleeping habits. Some squirrels sleep in hollowed-out trees. Other squirrels build a special kind of nest called a "dray" out of twigs and sticks. A well-built dray can last a squirrel 2 or 3 years!

How do you like to sleep? What do you do before you go to bed to help you get a good night's sleep? Describe your bed and what you do before bed to help you get a good night's sleep.
