We Can!™ in Chinese

One thing that is unique about We Can! is its incredible adaptability, and culturally diverse community sites across the nation and globe are taking advantage of this flexibility to meet their individual needs.

The Nutrition Services Division of San Francisco's Chinatown Public Health Center (CPHC) is one of them. The CPHC has been running We Can! programming for a little over a year now, and tailoring it to better speak to its primary audience of Chinese Americans.

It probably won't surprise you that one of the key changes is the addition of culturally relevant foods to the mix. An example is the inclusion of dried Chinese mushrooms, bean sheet, and lemongrass on a Go, Slow, and Whoa Foods chart.

Another change is the substitution of family walks for car washes, since only a small number of families living in Chinatown own cars. If you've ever been to San Francisco, you know that walking up and down the hills there can be quite a workout.

But that's not all.

The CPHC is going one step further by translating We Can! materials into Chinese. We Can! materials and resources have been so well-received by Chinese parents that the CPHC has begun working to create a Chinese version of the We Can! Parent Handbook and the We Can! brochure, so that they are more culturally and linguistically appropriate for the community. This is the first Chinese translation of these materials.
