New Resource for School Staff on Asthma and Physical Activity

Asthma And Physical ActivityStudents aren’t the only ones who can get good grades this school year.  How about an A+ for classroom teachers, physical education teachers, coaches, athletic trainers, and other school staff who follow recommendations from the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) to help students control their asthma?

That goal is within reach thanks to Asthma & Physical Activity in the School, a new resource from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which coordinates the NAEPP.

This newly updated booklet provides a game plan for school staff to partner with parents and health care providers to empower students to take control of their asthma and be active in sports and physical activities.  It also outlines practical ways to keep students with asthma safe this school year.

Why focus on asthma and physical activity in school?  Because as many as 1 in 10 children has asthma.  Poorly controlled asthma can lead to troublesome symptoms, school absences, and life-threatening health emergencies.  And for students whose asthma is not well-controlled, exercise and other physical activity can bring on asthma symptoms and attacks.  When asthma is well-controlled, however, students can participate fully in all activities, including play, sports, and even vigorous exercise.

Order Asthma & Physical Activity in the School today for yourself and your school. Spread the word to your fellow school administrators, school nurses, teachers, and coaches and to parents and caregivers.  Your students will thank you!
