The Albemarle Park and Recreation Department teamed with the local hospital, Stanley Memorial, to develop the "Walk About" program for adults in the community. The partnership with the local hospital was an integral part of the success of this walking program which combined walks around the county with health education, screenings for blood pressure and blood glucose, stress management seminars, and strength training. Adults were encouraged to walk four times per week. The program continued during the fall because of strong interest from participants. For children, healthy snacks and health-related materials were incorporated into the existing summer day camps. Physical activity was encouraged with participation in soccer, tennis, and swimming. This program will be repeated in summer 2000. |
