Marfan Syndrome What Is Marfan Syndrome?

A tall, thin young man standing on a beachMarfan syndrome is a condition some people are born with. This condition affects a protein in the body that helps build healthy connective tissues. Connective tissues support the bones, muscles, and organs in your body and allow your skin, blood vessels, and ligaments to stretch.

People who have Marfan syndrome may be tall and thin and have long arms, legs, fingers, and toes, as well as flexible joints. The most serious problems happen when the condition affects the heart and blood vessels.

Your healthcare provider may recommend medicines, surgery, or other treatments to manage or prevent complications. Limiting certain activities, or changing how you do them, may help reduce or prevent complications in the heart, eyes, and joints.
