Turning Research into Reality: The NACI Launches a New Era in Keeping Airways Open

Welcome to the first edition of NACI in the Know, a quarterly e-newsletterfrom the National Asthma Control Initiative (NACI).

The NACI is a new initiative of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP), coordinated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health.

Our mission is to help the 23 million Americans with asthma breathe easier by moving into practice the latest, science-based guidelines on asthma care and control from two reports—the NAEPP’s Expert Panel Report 3-Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma (EPR-3) and its accompanying Guidelines Implementation Panel (GIP) Report.

How?

The NACI is actively recruiting partners—and other asthma champions—to offer their expertise and resources to help advance asthma best practices community-wide.

Why approach the entire community?  Because helping people with asthma get properly diagnosed; receive consistent and quality care; and manage their disease takes a broad spectrum of community members—starting with the patients themselves and running to healthcare professionals, employers, educators, insurers, and beyond.

In mid-November, the NHLBI awarded 13 grants of approximately $100,000 each to projects that will test and demonstrate the GIP Report’s recommendations on how to get people to adopt and use science-based asthma guidelines. These NACI Demonstration Projects will spend the next two years testing those recommendations in creative ways.

“By putting into action the key recommendations of the Guidelines Implementation Panel on how to improve asthma care and control, these new demonstration projects are another major step toward improving the quality of life for the millions of Americans who have asthma,” said Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D, Director, NHLBI.

Stay plugged into NACI in the Know for updates on these projects, and for news on tips, tools, and strategies that you can use to promote asthma best practices and improve the quality of live for asthma patients, coast to coast.
