The new high blood pressure guidelines classify persons with systolic blood pressures of 120-139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressures of 80-89 mmHg as prehypertensive. In this figure the risk of stroke death begins to rise at a systolic blood pressure of 115. For every 20 mmHG increase above that, the risk of stroke death doubles. The increase in risk occurs at every decade of life.
