The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Division
of Intramural Research (DIR) invites students in the Minority
Access to Research Careers Undergraduate Student Training in
Academic Research (MARC U*STAR) program to participate in the
NHLBI-Sponsored MARC U*STAR Program. The purpose of the Program
is to encourage participants to pursue careers in biomedical
research through hands-on training in a research environment.
The NHLBI Division of Intramural Research (DIR) conducts
basic research in molecular and cellular biology, genetics,
biochemistry, and physiology, and clinical research in heart,
blood, and lung diseases. NHLBI DIR consists of 12 laboratories
and 5 branches integrated around central themes of cellular
processes, mechanisms of normal biology and pathology, disease
pathophysiology and novel treatments for heart, lung, and
blood diseases. Areas of major interest include arteriosclerosis;
vascular biology; cardiac imaging; aplastic anemia; asthma
and other inflammatory lung diseases; the molecular genetics
of cardiovascular disease; signal transduction; lymphocyte
biology; kidney physiology as related to hypertension; and
others.
Who is eligible? Junior and Senior undergraduate students
in the National Institute of General Medical Sciences MARC
U*STAR Program. Applicants must be recommended by MARC Program
Directors. Final selection is made by NHLBI Intramural scientists.
The opportunities? Research training in Intramural
laboratories.
Duration of support? A maximum of ten weeks in the
summer.
Where? In the NHLBI laboratories, Bethesda, Maryland
Applications due? Annually by March 1st for summer
appointment
Stipend: $3,000 for ten weeks plus up to $500 for
round trip transportation.

via the NIH web site at
http://www.training.nih.gov. Select the National Heart
Lung and Blood Institute in the assignment preferences area
on the application. At the same time as filing an application,
please send an e-mail to the Office of Minority Health Affairs
at: Hm31y@nih.gov ; informing
them that you have filed an application on the NIH training
web site and wish to work at NHLBI.
