Mentored Career Award for Faculty at Minority Serving
Institutions (K01)
(Postdoctoral Individuals/New Independent Researchers)
This program provides research support to faculty members
at minority serving institutions who can conduct high quality
research in the areas of cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic,
or sleep disorders. Important NHLBI program goals are to enhance
the minority serving institution's science infrastructure
by developing the research career and teaching skills of the
candidate.
Candidates for this award must be faculty members at a minority
serving institution who: 1) are U.S. citizens, noncitizen
nationals, or permanent residents by the time of the award;
2) have a doctoral degree or equivalent in a biomedical
or behavioral science at least two years prior to the award;
and 3) wish to receive specialized training in cardiovascular,
pulmonary, hematologic, or sleep disorders research. Each
candidate must identify and complete arrangements with a mentor
(at the same institution or at a collaborating research center)
who is recognized as an accomplished investigator in the proposed
research area and who will provide guidance for the candidate's
career development and research plan.

Special
Leave Guidelines for Recipients of Mentored Career Award
Who is eligible? All faculty members at domestic institutions
with student enrollment drawn substantially from diverse populations
who are currently underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral
research.
Current and former recipients of K12 support may apply for
the K01 provided that they have no more than three years of
K12 support by the time the K01 award is issued. The combined
total of K12 plus K01 support must not exceed 6 years. A candidate
for the K01 may not concurrently apply for or have an award
pending for any other NIH career development award.

Salary: Faculty -- up to $75,000 per year plus fringe
benefits and up to $36,000 for research development support.

Prospective applicants are asked to submit a letter of intent
by July 25, 2009 for applications received by August 25,
2009 to the Chief, Review Branch at the address listed below.
Although a letter of intent is not required, is not binding,
and does not enter into the review of a subsequent application,
the information that it contains allows the NHLBI staff
to estimate the potential review workload and plan the review.
