Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in
Health-Related Research - Established Researchers
Who Become Disabled
This supplement
enables principal investigators with eligible NHLBI research
grants/contracts who become disabled to obtain additional
support to continue their research. Funds may be requested
to make changes or adjustments in the laboratory setting that
will enable the investigator with disabilities to perform
the essential functions associated with his or her research
project and/or to hire an assistant. Accommodation requests
must be reasonable in relationship to the direct costs of
the parent grant/contract.

Who is eligible? All principal investigators
at U.S. institutions with eligible NHLBI research grants/contracts
who become disabled during the current project period.
The opportunities? Research
Duration of support? Established investigators
on NIH research, program project, center grants, or contracts
who become disabled during the current project period may
request funds for reasonable accommodations to permit completion
of the currently funded research project.
Where? At the principal investigator's institution
Applications due? There is no application
receipt date. However, awards are made four times per year
(December, March, June, and September) at the investigator
level. Principal investigators are encouraged to synchronize
the supplement requested start date with the parent grant/contract
budget period start date. All applications should arrive at
least three months before the requested
start date, to allow time for review.
Support: May request support for special
equipment, an assistant, or other modifications to facilitate
reasonable accommodation to a disabling injury or illness
that has occurred during the current project.
