Guidance on the
NHLBI Small Grants (R03) Program

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
National Institutes of Health

The NHLBI Small Grants (R03) Program is intended to provide limited support for research projects both in terms of the length of the award and its size. The R03 grant mechanism is used to fund small, short-term research projects that are designed to obtain data from preliminary, proof-of-concept collaborative experiments. Previously, these have included proposals to develop research methodologies, pilot or feasibility studies using novel data sets or biospecimen repositories, and applications seeking to satisfy a prerequisite to participate in an Institute-funded consortium (e.g., by successfully developing multidisciplinary proposals).

It is the policy of the NHLBI to accept R03 applications only when such grants are solicited by the Institute through a specific NHLBI Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). The NHLBI does not accept investigator-initiated R03 applications in response to the NIH’s Parent FOA for R03 applications (PA-10-064). If unsolicited small grant support is needed for a research project, it is recommended that individuals contact the appropriate Institute staff to discuss other options (please see General Contact Information below).

Further information about a specific R03 FOA can be obtained using the contact information provided within the individual FOA. For general information regarding the R03 program, contact the appropriate scientific Division.
