The NHLBI Participation in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will receive a 34 percent increase to its FY 2009 budget to help stimulate the economy. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute leadership and stakeholders are very grateful for the opportunity to join the NIH to advance and accelerate the biomedical research agenda in this country by focusing on scientific opportunities and public health challenges.

To help potential applicants navigate ARRA-related information, the NHLBI developed the NHLBI Recovery Act section on its website. The NHLBI is working closely with the NIH and HHS to ensure that scientific merit and quality, as well as transparency and accountability, are the guiding principles behind the Institute’s implementation of the ARRA.

New information will be added as it is available.  For questions or comments, please email the NHLBI Web Manager.

Important Grant Application Update

October 9, 2009

For receipt dates of January 25, 2010, and later, there will be major changes in the format and page limitations of grant applications submitted to the NIH.  Significant changes include aligning the sections of the application with the evaluation criteria used by review panels, and substantial reduction in the Research Strategy maximum length for most mechanisms (e.g., the limit for the investigator-initiated R01 will be 12 pages).   These changes apply to both electronic and paper submissions.  For complete information, please consult the following links:
