My vision for the Institute is based on a fundamental set

We are engaged in a special form of public service – promoting patient and public health.  The Institute is uniquely positioned to catalyze changes that transform
new scientific knowledge into tangible improvements in health.  I foresee an array of opportunities to build and diversify the strengths of the NHLBI.
 

• Stimulate basic discoveries about the causes of disease - We will continue to invest in the most talented scientists conducting the highest caliber research.
  
  
• Speed the translation of these discoveries to clinical practice - Our challenge is to expand clinical research to complement the basic science discoveries, while making it more efficient and cost-effective.
  
  
• Foster training and mentoring of emerging scientists and physicians - We must help equip our emerging scientists with the knowledge and skills needed for success in an ever-changing and complex research environment.
  
  
• Effectively communicate advances to the public - We have an obligation to translate our research findings and educating our patients and the public at large.  Education regarding the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders must be one of our highest priorities.

The realization of this vision will require the advice, wisdom, and efforts of many.
