Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination (OTAC)



The Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination supports the development of new technologies from lab to market to meet unmet medical needs in the heart, lung, blood, and sleep areas. OTAC is home to the Institute's small business programs (SBIR and STTR) and the NIH Centers for Accelerated Innovations.

Its four major functions include:

    • Business Development Assistance
      NHLBI’s Dr. Gary N. Robinson provides information and assistance for a range of matters related to business development.
    • Entrepreneur-In-Residence
      NHLBI’s Dr. Ram Aiyar offers one-stop shopping for early commercial development, competitive analysis, and transactions resources.
    • Intellectual Property Assistance
      Dr. Gautam Prakash from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office helps with intellectual property education and support.
    • Regulatory Affairs
      NHLBI’s Dr. Chris Sasiela offers regulatory affairs education and strategy development assistance for NHLBI investigators engaged in biomedical product development.

NHLBI’s Centers for Accelerated Innovations (NCAI)

The NIH Centers for Accelerated Innovations accelerate translation of scientific discovery into commercial products that improve health for patients. This unique public-private partnership will change the way discoveries with scientific and commercial potential are identified and developed.
