The purpose of the course is to provide an intensive introduction to epidemiology for advanced under-graduate students and graduate students interested in careers in biomedical and behavioral research, and health professionals interested in learning epidemiology.
The course director will be Moyses Szklo, M.D., Dr P.H., Professor of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.
This course introduces the principles and methods of epidemiologic investigation of diseases. It illustrates the different study designs used for evaluating risk factors, and the effectiveness of health interventions and services. In addition to lectures, laboratory problems provide experience in epidemiologic methods and inferences, and deal with issues related to experimental and non-experimental designs, sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests, confounding effects and the use of the life-table approach to evaluate longitudinal data.
Interested candidates must complete the application form and attach a brief letter (not more than one page) describing his/her career goals, research experience, and motivation to take this course.
The deadline for receipt of the application is June 1, 1999. Notification of acceptance will be sent by June 15, 1999.
Classes will be held at Tougaloo College.
Tuition: None
Housing will be available on the Tougaloo College campus. Room and board on the Tougaloo campus will be paid by NIH and there will be no charge to the applicants. Applicants may also choose to stay off-campus in several nearby hotels, the cost of which will have to be borne by the applicants.
