Today, NIH Director Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., announced the selection of Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., as the new director of the NHLBI. Dr. Gibbons expects to join the Institute as director in the summer of 2012.
Gibbons will be joining us from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, where he is the founding director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, an NHLBI-supported Research Center of Excellence; chair of the Department of Physiology; and professor of medicine and physiology. Gibbons' institute at Morehouse is recognized for its discovery science related to cardiovascular health of minority populations. He has received many honors and is a leader in his field.
Gibbons received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard University. He completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Gibbons served on the faculties of the Stanford and Harvard Medical Schools before joining Morehouse School of Medicine in 1999.
I am personally thrilled that Dr. Gibbons has decided to join the Institute, and know that I speak for the other members of the NHLBI leadership team. Gary has been a valued member of the NHLBI Advisory Council, and the Institute has relied upon his wisdom for many years. I look forward to his arrival and to the opportunity to work with him to achieve our common vision.
