On Feb. 10, 2010, Woman's Day magazine recognized The Heart Truth® partner Suzanne Haynes, Ph.D. at its annual Red Dress Awards ceremony at Lincoln Center in New York City. Since 2003, the Red Dress Awards have honored people who lead the fight against heart disease, the number one killer of women. Dr. Haynes was one of five distinguished recipients this year.
Dr. Haynes has truly been a champion for The Heart Truth®. For the past five years, she has led the HHS Office on Women's Health (OWH) Cardiovascular Team, which funds The Heart Truth Champions program and other community-based Heart Truth events across the nation. Her leadership, and the support of the OWH, have been instrumental in the NHLBI’s efforts to reach women throughout the United States in areas with high rates of cardiovascular disease, particularly women of color or who are disadvantaged. The OWH’s support for this programming helps raise awareness of The Heart Truth® lifesaving messages about women's heart disease and helping women take action to achieve heart-healthy lifestyles.
Dr. Haynes has also led an extensive effort in partnership with the NHLBI to develop, test, and disseminate educational materials and resources to primary care providers, known as The Heart Truth® Professional Education Program. These materials teach physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nursing and medical students about how to assess heart disease risk factors in women and how to counsel female patients on taking action to lower their risk of heart disease.
